Theme: "Man and Death."
Text: Acts 7:51-60

51. You stiffnecked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. What your fathers were, so are you. 52. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now handed over and murdered. 53. You who received the law as commanded by angels and have not kept it! 54. When they heard this, they were furious in their hearts and gnashed their teeth at him. 55. But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56. And he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." 57. Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopping their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord. 58. They dragged him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59. And they stoned Stephen, who was praying and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" 60. And he fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" And after saying this, he fell asleep.

Let us remember:

We are not exempt from death, even though we are children of God. Our zeal should not lead us to believe that God will spare us from death. Even when we perform extremely praiseworthy acts, we will remain vulnerable and mortal subjects. We carry physical death in our flesh. Moreover, physical death is not inevitable because Christ is my life, and death is gain (Philippians 1:21). We gain by dying holy after having proclaimed the gospel of salvation like Stephen; instead of dying satisfied with old age and having lost the faith. Let us know that the pagan world rejoices when a Christian is mistreated or killed. Let us not fear because all those who came before us suffered imprisonment, plunder, betrayal, defamation, torture, death. The most important thing is to do the work to which we were called to serve God. Jesus Christ was put to death and He let Himself go while He had the power not to pass through death. When we hear the word of God that we preach, even if the audience becomes furious in heart, even if people gnash their teeth at us, let us not fear to die, like Stephen. Let us be filled with the Holy Spirit, and let us fix our eyes on heaven, to see the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. While he was being stoned, Stephen knelt and took the time to intercede for the forgiveness of his executioners. Excellent Wednesday. Amen.
