Theme: "The Christian and the Use of Christian Freedom."
Text: Romans 6:17-22
17. But thanks be to God, that though you were slaves of sin, you have obeyed from the heart the form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18. Being set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19. I speak after the manner of men because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you once yielded your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to lawlessness, so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20. For while you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. 21. What fruit did you then bear? Fruits of which you are now ashamed. For the end of those things is death. 22. But now, having been set free from sin and become slaves to God, you have your fruit in holiness and the end in eternal life.
Let us remember:
To commit a sin or to adopt a worldly life, one must travel a certain distance. One must leave the fold and go beyond sanctification to adopt a new sinful life. Eve took this step by abandoning divine instruction. She took the liberty to commit the irreparable sin that we would still suffer today, were it not for the grace and forgiveness received in Jesus Christ. To commit a sin means to take the liberty of serving the devil. This can be done out of conviction or in ignorance. Regardless, we have a duty to scrutinize the Scriptures so as not to die for lack of knowledge. Like Eve, we too are accustomed to mustering up our courage and deciding to commit a sin. Sometimes we know the consequences, sometimes we minimize them, but sometimes we are blinded, unable to see the line between holiness and sin. Thanks to the masterful work of Jesus on the cross, we are freed from sin and have become slaves of righteousness. We can no longer endure injustice. Thus, we have yielded our members as slaves to righteousness, for the sake of holiness. We have moved from sin to sanctification. While we were slaves of sin, we were free from righteousness. We walked about aimlessly without purpose. But now, having been freed from sin and become slaves of God, we have our fruit unto holiness, and the end eternal life. Have a wonderful Thursday. Amen.
