Theme: “Worshiping God in Spirit and Truth”
Text: Matthew 4:8-10
8. Again, the devil took him up to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9. and said to him, “All these things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10. Jesus said to him, “Get thee hence, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”
Let us remember:
Jesus was taken up by Satan to a very high mountain. Satan showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory as if Jesus, the creator that he was, did not know about them. That was not enough for Jesus to give in to his deception. It is not the fact of having been touched by the devil that we must worship him. It is not because we are in great difficulty that we must agree to enter the lodges and become the devil's worker. We can refuse to worship Satan, we can refuse to worship the pleasures of this world. Lying remains the devil's trademark. He makes a promise to Jesus to give him all visible things, if Jesus would bow down and worship him. Now, all things already belong to Jesus, he is the Creator of the world. However, Jesus refuses to follow this exchange in the sense of possessing goods, riches because he knows that there is no debate on this point. He goes where it hurts the most, where the shoe pinches: worship. Satan knew that if Jesus worshiped him, he would tame him, he would inflict a snub on him without a setback. It would necessarily be the failure of his mission. Jesus, for his part, knew that if he worshipped Satan, he would disobey his Father, he would become inferior to Satan, he would be unfaithful. Jesus teaches us that, no matter the pressure or oppression, we must never give in, we must never worship Satan. Despite the riches he holds out before us, let us not worship Satan. Only God must be worshiped but in spirit and in truth. Excellent Thursday. Amen
