Theme: "The Appearances of Jesus Christ."
Text: John 21:20-22
20. Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved coming after them, the one who had leaned on Jesus' breast during supper and said, "Lord, who is he who is betraying you?" 21. When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what will happen to this man?" 22. Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me."
Remember:
The appearance of Jesus at the water's edge continues to teach us to this day. It was a masterclass. Jesus taught Peter not to waste his energies on things that bring him nothing. He wanted Peter to be rigorous in his thoughts and expectations. Peter wanted to know how his fellow disciple John's life would end? In fact, Jesus had just told Peter that he too would end his life on the cross like his Master. It was at this moment that Peter wanted to know more about the disciple John. Certainly, the idea of a comparison was running through his head to see what was in store for John because Jesus loved him very much. But Jesus gave him an evasive answer to force him to enter into his plan, the plan of rigor, determination, commitment, dedication. Peter had to close his eyes to everything outside his mission in order to succeed in building the early church. Peter had to banish all partisan considerations and focus on the work to which he was called. This appearance of Jesus was focused on Peter. Jesus gave him all the keys to the ministry so that nothing could prevail over him (Matthew 16 verse 18). It was to ensure Peter maintained his leadership that Jesus firmly prepared him to be operational in the days that followed. Peter's question demonstrated that he was not yet ready to move in the direction Jesus was showing him, as he was still drawn to trivialities and lusts. We saw that on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit seized Peter to proclaim the Word to the multitude. It was for such an occasion that Jesus took the time to prepare him during this apparition. Have a wonderful Saturday. Amen.
