Theme: “With Jesus Christ, let us move from mediocrity to excellence” Text: Matthew 5:20
20. For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Let's remember:
The mediocrity subtly described in this verse is making judgments based on the flesh. Now, the Lord God wants us to draw justice from our hearts in order to act well in accordance with God's will. The Lord Jesus calls us to excellence, to have pure justice enlightened by God. We must leave carnal judgment as promoted by the scribes and Pharisees. Let us move on to excellence which consists of weighing judgments on the true scales of equity, as our God wants. This is why the Lord Jesus tells us in verses 21 and 22 true justice, that which is excellent. It is written: “21. Ye have heard that it was said unto them of old, Thou shalt not kill; he who kills deserves to be punished by the judges. 22. But I tell you that whoever is angry with his brother deserves to be punished by the judges; than the one who says to his brother: Raca! deserves to be punished by the Sanhedrin; and whoever says to him: Fool! deserves to be punished by the fire of Gehenna.” Mediocrity consists of following the law in its carnal sense while excellence calls us to love our neighbor. Mediocrity empties each content of its most precious substance and leaves only the carnal residue that cheers the devil. However, excellence brings us back to the fundamentals of Christian life, namely, the love of neighbor manifested by Jesus Christ in offering his life for the salvation of the world. What could be more excellent than leaving mediocrity to place love of God and our neighbor at the heart of life? Have a great Thursday. Amen Alain Louz.-
