Theme: “Who shall we serve in the world?” Text: Matthew 6:24-33
24. No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will cling to one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon. 25. Therefore I say to you: Do not worry about your life what you will eat, nor about your body what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26. Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap, and they do not lay up anything in barns; and your Heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than them? 27. Which of you, by worrying, can add a cubit to the length of his life? 28. And why worry about clothing? Consider how field lilies grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29. Yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30. If God thus clothes the grass of the field, which exists today and which tomorrow will be thrown into the oven, will he not with all the more reason clothe you, O you of little faith? 31. Therefore do not worry, and do not say: What shall we eat? what shall we drink? what will we be wearing? 32. For all these things the pagans seek. Your Heavenly Father knows you need it. 33. Seek first the kingdom and righteousness of God; and all these things will be given to you as well.
Let's remember:
By dint of worrying about the things of this world, it is certain that we will become servants of these things. To serve something is to put all your heart and all your energy into acquiring it, keeping it, cherishing it but above all being attached to it. Putting your heart at the disposal of the things of this world is a choice made to serve them. One who attaches himself to money and uses it as his master; money will become an idol or a god. We come to serve the things of this world because of worry and lack of patience. It is because we make choices uninformed by the Word of God that we find ourselves at the end of our rope. We enter the cycle of routine until we believe that God does not hear us. Our prayers are centered more on requests for worldly goods than on eternal life. However, it is quite the opposite that God asks of us. He wants us to pray for and be centered in eternal life. It is then that he will give us the rest that we crave. Which of us, by his anxieties, can add a day to the span of his life? It is only God who can bring a turning point in our life. Therefore, he must be the only one whom we must serve. Cars, trips, diplomas, marriages, work… must not take the place of God. They must be at our service. Let us worry about access to eternal life and not about the things of this world at the risk of serving them. We must serve God if we want to be well dressed like flowers. Excellent Sunday. Amen Alain Louz.-
