Theme: “To be a disciple of Jesus Christ"
Text: Luke 14:28-35
28. For which one of you, if he wants to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the cost and see if he has enough to finish it, 29. lest after having laid the foundation, he cannot finish it, and all who see him begin to mock him, 30. saying, This man began to build, and he could not finish it? 31. Or what king, if he is going to make war against another king, does not sit down first to consider whether he can, with ten thousand men, meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32. If he cannot, while this other king is still far away, he sends him an embassy to ask for peace. 33. Therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he possesses cannot be my disciple. 34. Salt is a good thing; but if the salt loses its flavor, with what shall we season it? 35. It is neither good for the earth nor for manure; we throw him out. Let him who has ears to hear hear.
Remember:
Before committing yourself as a disciple, you have to sit down and calculate how perilous the path is because of the cross to bear and the vagaries of a disciple's daily life. This is exactly where Christ comes in. As soon as one feels weak, unable to face the battles of life, it is the right occasion to say: I cannot do anything by my own strength; I surrender my life to Jesus and rely on Him for the rest of my earthly pilgrimage. He who hopes in his Master will never be disappointed. But he who relies on his own means will not go further than he will capsize. Pierre wanting to walk on water failed as soon as the shadow of a doubt crossed his mind. The disciple must renounce everything, including himself. He must give up his abilities to rely on the strength coming from God. Likewise, he must free himself from encumbrances such as material goods which take up more space in our hearts; leaving only a little love for God. Our flavor comes from the ability to love and obey the Master, otherwise we become bland and tasteless at worst we become bitter or sour; good for the dustbin of eternal gehenna. Excellent Friday. Amen
