Theme : “ The place of the Holy Scriptures in the ministry of Jesus Christ ”
Text : Matthew 4:5-7
5. The devil carried him into the holy city, placed him on the top of the temple, 6. and said to him: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you; And they will carry you on your hands, Lest your foot strike against a stone. 7. Jesus said to him: It is also written: You shall not tempt the Lord your God.
Let's remember:
After the first stinging failure that Jesus made the devil suffer by refusing to obey him; the devil insisted on his will to harm. He will draw from the Holy Scriptures Psalms 91:11-12. The devil being the father of lies, quoting the Holy Scriptures, he removed the end of verse 11 which is the most juicy part and which says “To keep you in all your ways”. About the ways referred to are the ways of obedience to God. And Jesus was in strict obedience to His Father. Thus, he took into his bosom Deuteronomy 6:16 which says: “You shall not tempt the Lord your God”. Jesus teaches us not to go against the Holy Scriptures just to prove that God is good and loving and protecting us. Anyone who acts in this way is on the wrong track because the Eternal calls us to the obedience of the Holy Scriptures without exception. The verse quoted by the devil did not throw Jesus off balance. A verse used in the wrong context and which goes against the will of God, loses its force since it becomes a pretext. Jesus corrected the devil with the Holy Scriptures properly placed in the right place at the right time. Excellent Tuesday. Amen Alain Louz.-
