Theme: “The Conduct of the Christian Widow”
Text: 1 Timothy 5:4-10
4. If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn above all to exercise piety towards their own family, and to repay to their parents what they have received from them; for this is pleasing to God. 5. She who is truly a widow, and who has remained in isolation, places her hope in God and perseveres night and day in supplications and prayers. 6. But she who lives in pleasures is dead, although she is alive. 7. Declare these things to them, that they may be blameless. 8. If anyone does not care for his own, especially those of his family, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 9. That a widow, to be registered on the roll, must not be less than sixty years old, that she has been the wife of only one husband, 10. that she be commendable by good works, having brought up children, exercised hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, helped the unfortunate, practiced every kind of good work.
Let's remember:
Widows must be well taken care of by their children but also by their grandchildren. Paul teaches Timothy, his child in faith, that every child must take care of his widowed mother; by providing for his needs. The child must remember that he has been well taken care of by his mother since a young age. When he grows up, the child must return the favor to his mother who is spending difficult seasons in widowhood. This outpouring of generosity does not stop with children; it must also reach the grandchildren; knowing that the grandmother suffered for her children. This also applies to fathers who remain widowed. Children and grandchildren must return to their parents what they received from them; for this is pleasing to God. Otherwise, they will deny their faith, and will be worse than infidels. The widow must spend the rest of her life listening to God and obeying him. She must take care of her relationship with God. She must remain honest and continue to participate in the activities of her community, as long as she has the strength. She can no longer fall into the pleasures of the world at the risk of sullying her reputation and above all losing her faith and her salvation. Before becoming a widow, every woman must be commended by good works. Have a great Thursday. Amen
