Theme: “The Conduct of the Christian Widow”
Text: Mark 12:41-44
41. Jesus, having sat down opposite the trunk, watched how the crowd put money into it. Many rich people put in a lot. 42. There also came a poor widow, and she put in two small coins, making a quarter of a penny. 43. Then Jesus called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has given more than any of those who put into the treasury; 44. for all have put in from their surplus, but she has put in from what is necessary, all that she had, all that she had to live on.
Let's remember:
It’s about how to behave; it is about the behavior, the attitude of a widow who exercises the Christian faith. So it’s about his manners, his behavior in public or in private. This is the way to behave in relation to biblical prescriptions. A woman whose spouse is dead is called a widow. The text to meditate on mentions a poor widow who had almost nothing to give to God. This contrasts with rich people who gave a lot of money. We must not understand that to be a widow is to be poor. But this text conveys the message of self-sacrifice, a message of love for God, despite her harsh condition as a poor and widow. In addition, she is among rich “men”. The ideal and humane attitude would be to sit and watch the rich parade to wait if one of them would come and give him alms. Even today, widows, and not only them, many people refuse to go and pray when they do not have money for the offering, because of shame; but above all out of pride because the image that these people project is that of wealthy people. This widow did not lock herself in her ego, she did not deny her faith, she did not show pride or shame. She took out her meager coin accompanied by a heart full of love and humility. She offered her heart as an offering. Being a widow does not prevent you from giving with a good disposition of heart. Have a great Monday. Amen
