Theme: "God provides for our needs."
Text: Genesis 22:13-15
13. Abraham looked up, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14. Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh. Therefore it is said today, In the mountain of the LORD it will be provided. 15. The angel of the LORD called Abraham a second time from heaven,
Let us remember:
Saint Thomas Aquinas said: "No one is required to do the impossible." This can be explained in these terms: No one can be required to perform an act if it is not feasible. Abraham wanted to do the impossible. He had agreed to sacrifice his child Isaac, whom God had provided after a long wait. The people of Moloch were accustomed to sacrificing the firstborn by burning them in the fire. Abraham had already left Ur, his hometown, on God’s instructions. He had gone to Canaan and there were peoples who made sacrifices to their god, like the Ammonites, a Canaanite ethnic group, who sacrificed the firstborn by throwing them into a brazier. Our God does not delight in burning children or babies. When God gives a child, he does not take him back, however, He can take him into his service to spread his kingdom. Abraham had received a clear request from God to offer his child as a sacrifice. What is normal since it was the practice in the country. But God is a provider. He stopped this macabre enterprise and provided a ram to continue the sacrifice. Isaac had asked a question that ran for centuries: “My father, here is the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? The answer came from John the Baptist several centuries later: "He saw Jesus coming to him, and he said: Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." God had provided for Abraham's need and he has also provided for that of humanity. Excellent Wednesday. Amen
